Main Street Revitalization: Newfield, NY

Problem statement

The Newfield Hamlet Revitalization Project is a redesign of the intersections of three main streets in the Newfield Hamlet, NY. The revitalization plan was developed to increase the walkability, attractiveness, safety, and vibrancy of the town’s historic center, including the Newfield Covered Bridge, completed in 1853.

Methodologies

The revitalization plan was rooted in community outreach efforts, amplifying community voices to tailor planning recommendations. Through surveys, phone interviews, conversations, and town halls, community members were encouraged to discuss their ideas, desires, and expectations for the revitalization project.

Deliverables

An extensive report of the focus area context, community visioning, and development of improvement concepts was created, complete with phased design recommendations and  budget considerations. The proposed changes to the intersection focused on improved pedestrian safety, pocket parks, and event space and programming to create a more community-focused atmosphere. The findings were presented to the residents of Newfield and the Town of Newfield Planning Board for action.
